"You have one body & you'll have it for the rest of your life.
By attending to your breath, you'll be able to get to know it,
cherish it & nurture it's every detail"

What is Breath?

Breath is life. We cannot live without breath for more than a few minutes. Breath is an inhalation or exhalation of air from the lungs.

The average person breathes 22,000 breaths per day. Adults normally take 12- 20 breaths per minute.
- Canadian Lung Association

What is Breathing?

The primary organs of the respiratory system are the lungs. If the inner surface of the lungs could be stretched out flat, they would occupy an area about the size of half a tennis court!

The diaphragm is the most efficient muscle of breathing. It is a large dome shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs. Your abdominal muscles help move the diaphragm & give you more power to empty your lungs.

The main function of the lungs is to help oxygen from the air we breathe, enter the red cells in the blood. Red blood cells then carry oxygen around the body to be used in the cells found in our body. The lungs also help the body get rid of carbon dioxide gas when we breathe out.

The body has an estimated 75 trillion cells! All cells need oxygen to live. Freely available in the air around us, oxygen is the essential fuel to help cells stay alive and carry out their jobs.

Breathing is one of the few bodily functions which within limits, can be controlled both consciously (example - breath power therapy) and unconsciously (by the centers in the brain stem).

Breathing is the essential source of both energy & consciousness.

What is Balance Breathing?

It is breathing that uses 'focused breath' in specific areas of the body. First area of focus is the belly. Breathing into your belly stores energy in your 'center' or 'Hara'. Second area is the heart. Breathing into your heart stores energy into your heart/lungs/chest. Other focus areas are any areas of pain or weakness.

Balance Breathing can be practiced wherever you find space to soften and/or close your eyes, relax & focus inward; walking, standing, sitting or lying down.
